Mission

The Stockbridge-Munsee Family Services Program seeks to provide educational programming and direct services to families of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community.  We believe that strong families are vital to the well-being of the individual and the community as a whole.

We strive to deliver enriching programs in a safe and nurturing environment, to motivate leadership, self-awareness, respect and responsibility.  We are committed to preventing violence and abuse and to advocating for those who have been harmed.  By drawing on the community's strengths, we can foster positive growth and change.

We understand the importance of our Native American culture and spirituality as we take part in creating and sustaining a strong, healthy community.  To fulfill our mission, the following services are offered:

  • Emergency shelter
  • Independent living skills for adults and teens
  • Supervised visitation for youth and elderly
  • Emergency food and clothing
  • Domestic violence training
  • Staffing in-services
  • Information and referral
  • Parenting in-home and office
  • Assessments for adolescents
  • Client and youth transportation

After-School Program

The After-School Program (ASP) starts the first day of school and is for Kindergarten through 6th graders.  The youth participate in activities in the ASP room at the Family Center and play games in the gym.  Some of the youth also assist with the Diabetes Awareness Walk, clean up after the W'Chin din ceremonies and other community service activities.

The Family Services ASP offers a structured and safe environment to prevent latch-key children from being home alone while their parents are at work.  The program provides nutritious snacks to participants, many of whom are transported to the Family Center by the Bowler School District bus service.  The youth play in the gym, participate in arts and crafts and AODA prevention lessons, and travel throughout Wisconsin in the summer on fun, educational field trips.  Parents pick up their children any time before 6:00 p.m.  Monthly program calendars are located outside the door of the ASP room which is the first door to the left upon entering the Mohican Family Center.  There is no charge for the ASP.  Current medical forms and permissions slips are required to participate in the program.  For more information, please contact any Family Services staff member who will be happy to assist you!

Teen Prevention Program

The group is for youth ages 13-18 who are engaged in activities in the areas of alcohol and drug abuse prevention, leadership, self-sufficiency growth, juvenile delinquency prevention, domestic violence training, suicide prevention and financial management.  The youth group holds fundraisers, conducts community service projects and goes on cultural field trips during the summer.  Brat fries, Indian taco sales, car washes, bake sales, 50/50 raffles and rummage sales are just a few of the ways youth raise money for worthy causes such as help with the domestic violence homeless shelter and community Pow wows.  Please contact us for more information!
