The Mohican People
Their Lives and Their Lands

In spite of James Fenimore Cooper's mistaking them for Mohegans and, in so many words, pronouncing them a "vanishing people," the Mohicans are alive and well and living in Wisconsin.  This kit is one small effort to bridge that gap of learning for young people who should know that this Native Nation was once a power to be reckoned with in what we now call the northeastern United States.

What  Readers Say About Mama' s Little One

In Mama's Little One,   Heath's simple text nestles into endearing illustrations.  The result is a book which provides a large does of Indian morality in a time-honored model for us all - correlating responsible action with societal well-being and survival.  *The Mohican and Mohegan Tribes are ancient relatives.

**NI YA YA, an Official Publication of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut, Vol. 1, No. 9, p. 5.

Mama's Little One is the story of one little boy who is learning what is expected of him by his parents and his community.  These are the lessons that apply to all children making this a very appropriate story for pre-schoolers.  Mama's Little One would be a welcome addition to any classroom or school library.

**Patricia Landry, Director, Native American Headstart, Boston, MA

[This] is the telling of a traditional mother-child talking experience; the transmitting of a threatening yet enduring heritage, and a testimony to its survival - no, the heritage not only survives; in a endeavor such as this, it thrives.

**Beatrice Ganley, author, poet and teacher of writing and literature at Nazareth College, Rochester, NY

...A lovely little booth that teaches a lot.

What Readers say about Chief Ninham:  Forgotten Hero

[Ms.] Bowman has brought this stirring tale to light in a dramatic and historically useful way.  She also captured the essence of a brave man and made his life and deeds accessible to children.  Children today need a hero and Chief Ninham is an admirable role model.

Even Jean Bowman and the children of Bowler have created an important lesson for us all.  It is a story that needs to be shared in schools and in families across the country.  Recommended for kindergarten and first grade as a read aloud and for second through fifth grades for reading and research.

**Marilyn Elie, in "The Nimham Times Magazine", Fall 199, p. 11

This book brings to surface all the truth in a language that our young people can understand, while gaining a sense of cultural pride and belonging.

**Kenneth R. Ninham, MSE/ICAD 111

Bowman writes with a spare economy of words that show the essence, life and deeds of a great leader.  the crayon and colored pencil illustrations by the children of Bowler, many whom are citizens of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans, bring the circle aound.
